Steak Sandwich

Tonight, i saw The Social Network (very good movie) but left very hungry, as i did not buy any food at the theater. i went to the store hoping to get the ingredients to make a reuben sandwich (i make a very good reuben). to my dismay, however, the deli was closed and i would not be able to get the corned beef needed. i threw around some ideas but eventually decided to make a cheesesteak. however, i really dont care for steakums and would prefer something a little less processed. I had picked up some blue cheese to eat with crackers, but decided it would make a good sauce instead. i then got some cream to make a blue cheese cream sauce. then, i went to the meat area to pick up some flat round (cheap and easy to cook) finally, an onion to later be caramelized. i did the steak on an electric skillet. i put it all together and it was pretty good. i think the only thing i would change is use less cream to make a stronger sauce. all in all, i think it went well and would suggest it to others. give it a shot!

let me know what you think!

Last Post!!

The week is over! It's 12:09am. Exactly a week from when this started.

Saturday: As Josh said. we had Catering so not too much worrying. I had an iced caramel latte, some of Josh's awesome fried potatoes, many pieces of fruit, sausage and egg casserole. I also took home a ton of fruit and some muffins. Saturday night a couple friends brought over tall boys and so I partook in some Edward Tall Boy Hands. A good Saturday.

Sunday: THON 5k day! I knew there would be food at the beginning and end of the race so I was stoked. I had a bagel and cream cheese as soon as I got there and after running the 5k, made a beeline to the hospitality tent and picked out a cliff bar, two bananas, another bagel and a small piece of subway sandwich. With all of that plus the muffins I managed to bring home from catering, there wasn't even a chance of being hungry today.

All in all, it was an interesting experiment and it certainly is possible to live off free food. But as Josh said, the hardest part is not being able to satisfy craving and having to wonder where your next meal is coming from.

And I am soooooooooo stoked to hit up Starbucks tomorrow morning!!!!!!!

mmm coffee. Thanks for reading!

the weekend (final post of my week)

So, i know ive been slacking, but i have a lot to write about, but im going to try to condense. im happy to report that the end of the week was significantly easier then the beginning. apparently people feel mich more open to share on the weekend.

Friday: I worked on friday so food was easy to come by.  as soon as i got to work i was starving so i had a salad and chips (it was lunch time but i could not find the hot food as it was not in the break room). after the snack, i started working and was able to get some food in from the impromptu break room. i had a buffalo chicken sandwich. then, throughout work, i was able to get random food  (especially when the reception was being broken down. mmmmmm salami). finally, i had break again at the end of the event and had the same thing i had earlier. a buffalo chicken sandwich. noticing a pattern?

Saturday: Saturday i had catering club in the morning, so i knew i would be able to get food very easily. for the even we made egg casserole, fruit salad, sausage, french toast and an assortment of muffins. fortunately we had a lot of volunteers so i didnt have to cook anything. therefore, i took it upon myslef to perfect fried potatoes (like ones i had in germany). i fried about 12 potatoes and must say i got very good at preparing them and karen made a delicious aioli to go along with them. yum! we also cooked up some ham steaks to eat. i was able to bring a lot of this stuff home and ate for the night on them. some people also brought doritos over to pregame and i had some of those.

Sunday (today): today is the last day of the challenge. in the morning, i had some muffins left over from catering club yesterday and some orange juice that i brought home from that as well. then, a friend came over and brought everyone bagels and i had two of those (an asiago cheese and a blueberry). then i took a three hour nap to avoid hunger. then, tonight, i went to a friends place to watch a movie (after finding out the hub would not be playing Despicable Me). my friend had a jar of skittles which i made a small meal of. now, i am sitting on my couch contemplating the perfect meal to buy for 12am! i have never been so excited to order food. i think the hardest part about this week is not being able to get the food i want when i want it. everything i ate was decided by someone else. finally, i get to get my own meal!

I hope everyone has enjoyed reading our journey through this week of free food or sometimes, lack of free food. i plan on keeping this blog going dedicated to food in some form or another, so keep checking back.

Thanks for reading,
~Josh

Friday 10/15

This is my post from Friday that I didn't get around to posting!

I went to work in the morning where finding food was ridiculously easy. First, my friend accidentally made too much fruit salad. The solution? Eat some. Then I was given the end of the huge slab of provolone which I wrapped up. I was also given some extra fruit in a cup and two kaiser rolls. I also ate a random selection of vegetables, pieces of brownie, a diet coke and a bottle of water.

I took all my food home with me, but was so full I saved it. For dinner I ended up eating the two kaiser rolls. toasted and with the provolone cheese melted on top and the cup of fruit.

Very good day. No drinking was done that night even though I probably could have found some for free...

Sensory lab win.

Today was looking to be rough. No work or 330. That is, until I got the email saying breakfast sandwich testing. I got to the lab early before my first class and was given THREE breakfast sandwiches on english muffins to test. I tried them all, picked my favourite (bacon, egg and cheese, mmmm) and then wrapped up the rest. I had the thick Canadian bacon, cheese and egg one for lunch and the thin canadian bacon, cheese and egg one for dinner.

Later I had a couple of cucumber slices from my roommate and a tangerine lollipop from PNC. I also went to see a No Refund Theatre show that my friend directed and, wanting to support them, gave a donation. A Hershey bar was a reward for my donation which was fine by me!

I just got back from my friends pregame where I had some pieces of candy corn and a rum and coke.

Another good day and I work tomorrow morning, meaning I know where my next meal is coming from!

Wednesday = 330 Heaven

So Wednesday was 330. I started the morning with an iced caramel latte which I have been craving all week. Around 11:00am it was lunchtime and I didn't know what to eat first. I settled on a chicken curry sandwich with a couple sweet potato chips and a salad with olives, cucumbers, tomatos, peppers and parmasan cheese. I finished the meal with some ice cream, bananas and brown sugar sauce.

After class, we were given candy by the management team. I got a mini snickers.

All in all, it was a fantastic day.

i think my stomach is angry

as i predicted, today was a hungry day. my biggest meal of the day was 2 snack size packages of starburst gummies that everyone in class got from our student managers to thank us for a job well done. they were delicious but not very satisfying.  then, around dinner time, i had a single candy corn. it was thrown at me and i am believer in waste not want not, plus i was really hungry. finally, my roommate Angie ordered out from Le Bistro and insisted that i tried some of her cheesy fries, so i had 2. she says theyre the best in town and i would certainly agree they are very good. luckily, i recieved a text from a cowoker asking me to work tomorrow and i accepted so i know where i will be getting my meal from tomorrow. i was getting worried that i would have to break the rules, but now, I DONT!!
